Stray Dogs Near Chernobyl Are Turning Bright Blue

Radioactive Dog

Several dogs living near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site have mysteriously turned bright blue, baffling animal rescuers and scientists. The Dogs of Chernobyl organization, which cares for about 700 stray dogs in the area, discovered three completely blue dogs while working to sterilize animals in the exclusion zone, and locals reported that these same dogs looked normal just a week earlier. The organization posted videos showing the blue-colored dogs alongside other dogs with regular brown and black fur.

Despite their strange appearance, the dogs seem to be active and healthy, and rescuers suspect the dogs may have rolled in some kind of chemical, possibly from a leaking portable toilet that was found in the same location, rather than anything related to radiation exposure. The dogs living in Chernobyl are descendants of pets that were left behind when people evacuated after the 1986 nuclear disaster. Scientists have been studying these dogs for years and found they have developed unique genetic changes from living in the radioactive environment.
