In the United States, it’s the wild west when it comes to naming a pet, but France has rules.
In the U.S., anything can be used as a name with no limits.
However, since 1926, pedigree dogs in France must be named according to an alphabetical system based on their birth year.
Roya Fox, a Francophile, shared this information in a viral Instagram reel, and many mixed-breed dog owners have also started following the rule.
So, dogs born in 2025 must have names starting with “W,” while those born in 2024 were assigned the letter "V."
The letters K, Q, W, X, Y, and Z are skipped due to the difficulty in finding suitable names.
