Coast Guard Hero Saves 165 People In Very First Rescue Mission

During deadly flash floods in Central Texas, Scott Ruskan, a 26-year-old Coast Guard rescue swimmer, saved 165 people in what was his first-ever mission. He had just completed his training when he was deployed with multiple helicopters to the Guadalupe River area. He served as the only triage coordinator on-site, while also taking part in active rescues from the air and on the ground.

Once on the scene, Ruskan directed Army and Coast Guard helicopters toward those in need of evacuation. He also tended to and provided comfort to many of the cold, wet, and frightened survivors.

Originally from Oxford, New Jersey, Ruskan left an accounting career in 2021 to join the Coast Guard and was stationed in Corpus Christi after training in aviation survival and rescue swimming. While officials are praising him for his courage and dedication, he remains focused on the ongoing search, saying, “It’s not over for us.”
