Mom’s Mother’s Day Gift Rule Sparks Social Media Debate

Jessica Molina’s mom, Lydia, was always clear about what kind of presents she wanted and wasn’t the “I’ll be happy with anything you get me” type. “My mom has always had the same Mother’s Day gift rule for as long as I can remember,” Jessica shared in a recent TikTok video. According to her mom, if it’s used for cleaning, decorating, cooking, or maintaining the house, it’s not a Mother’s Day gift because everyone in the family can benefit from it.

Now that Jessica is a mom, she says she’s on board with the idea and says she was inspired to share Lydia’s rule after reading about other women asking for household items for their special holiday. “I thought, ladies, we need to set the bar higher,” Jessica says in the video. “We need to have higher standards. This holiday is about recognizing the effort we put in all year long. We deserve to ask for things that are specifically meant for us.”

While lots of moms in the comments section agree with this gift rule, not everyone shares Lydia and Jessica’s perspective:

  • "Kinda disagree. If it makes my life easier I want it. I got a steam cleaner and I loved it."
  • "I disagree. Give me anything for my kitchen & I’m delighted! Cooking for my family gives me the most joy."
  • "YESSSSSS. All I want is my nails done. Something for myself to enjoy."
  • "This is my rule for Mother's Day, birthday, Christmas. If it's needed for the house it's not a gift."
  • "I agree! Cards, flowers, jewelry, add to her collection, art supplies, hair/nail appointment, a new outfit, a handbag, bath therapy, dinner out? There are so many good options before crockpot."
  • "My rule is it has to be something I can wear — jewelry, clothes, shoes and no cooking or cleaning that day."
  • "Your mom is better than mine… She just gave us the receipt and asked for her money. Then showed us the amazing gifts we gave her after payment was given."
