National Guardsman Uses Narcan To Save Woman From Overdosing

A Tennessee National Guardsman working with the Memphis Safe Task Force helped save a woman who was overdosing near Memphis International Airport last week. Staff Sergeant Cody Luhrs says his training kicked in when he and his team came across an unconscious woman in a semi-truck.

After checking on her, Luhrs recognized the signs of an overdose and worked with fellow Guardsmen to move her to a safe spot. He then administered Narcan, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose, reviving her.

After receiving care, the woman was taken to the hospital for further treatment. Luhrs says he’s grateful that he was prepared for a situation like this, calling it an “extraordinary moment on an ordinary day.”
