Born at just 21 weeks last July 5th, Nash Keen has been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s most premature surviving baby. He arrived 133 days early at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, weighing only 10 ounces and measuring just over 9 inches long. His parents, Mollie and Randall Keen, were initially told he had a 0% chance of survival.

Despite the odds, Nash spent six months in the neonatal intensive care unit before being healthy enough to go home. Dr. Patrick McNamara, part of his care team, shares that the data at the time didn’t support the possibility of survival for a baby born so early. Mollie describes her son as a cheerful baby with a big personality who’s always smiling.

He surpassed the previous record held by a baby born in Alabama on July 5th, 2020, at 21 weeks and 1 day. Earlier this month, Nash’s milestone first birthday was celebrated with his family in Iowa, marking a significant moment in medical history. His unexpected survival and amazing growth are being praised by his care team and celebrated by his family.
