Over the weekend, David Fry and his extended family of 33 were vacationing at the River Inn Resort in Hunt, Texas, when severe flash flooding struck the area. As the Guadalupe River surged more than 25 feet in under an hour, Fry and his family quickly recognized the danger and started knocking on doors to warn other guests. With water levels rising rapidly, the group made the decision to climb onto the roof of the building for safety.

Fry not only led his own family to higher ground, but also helped people staying in nearby rooms and homes across the street. They hoisted each other up to the roof and stayed there until the immediate threat had passed. Despite the fast-moving water and destruction in the area, all 33 family members survived the disaster.

Reflecting on the urgency of the rescue efforts, Fry says that a delay of even ten or fifteen minutes could have been too late. The family’s actions are being credited with saving not only their own lives but also those of others in the surrounding area.
