Teacher Intervenes To Stop Stabbing Of High School Student

A social studies teacher at Monache High School in Porterville, California is being praised for stopping an armed attacker who stabbed a student in his classroom. On Monday morning, a 19-year-old former student who’d been expelled the previous year walked into Robert Sundre’s classroom and stabbed a 15-year-old girl in her leg before the teacher intervened by charging at him with a chair, causing him to flee.

Sundre says he reacted instinctively when he saw the attack. After running the suspect off, he turned his attention to the injured student, applying pressure to her wound and directing staff to call 911. School nurses responded quickly and Porterville police arrested the suspect nearby shortly afterward.

Monache High School Principal Shondra Walker expressed deep gratitude to Sundre, calling his actions lifesaving. The student is recovering and expected to return to school soon. Sundre, a 30-year teaching veteran, will be formally recognized at an upcoming school board meeting.
