Police, K9 “Meatball” Rescue Missing Boy Stuck In Swamp

On Friday night, a seven-year-old boy in Merrimac, Massachusetts, was rescued after he got stuck in a swamp more than a mile from his home. The child had gone missing around 7:30 p.m., leading to an intensive multi-agency search effort. Amesbury Police Officer Tommy Nichols along with his partner K9 Meatball located the boy waist-deep in water and unable to move through the mud.

He was safely pulled out by Nichols and two other officers, and they received help from drone units that guided them out of the marsh. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and released the same night. Merrimac Police Chief Eric Shears praised the rapid response, saying the quick discovery likely prevented a tragic outcome, and Amesbury Police Chief Craig Bailey commended the teamwork involved.

K9 Meatball, who’s five years old and joined the force in 2022, is being credited with leading the successful rescue. Named by Officer Nichols' family, Meatball is the offspring of another Amesbury patrol K9 and has quickly become a local favorite for both his skill and personality.
