On Saturday night, a train collided with a vehicle in Springville, Utah, but fortunately, quick-thinking actions by a bystander and the locomotive engineer prevented serious injury. According to Springville Fire & Rescue, a “citizen hero” helped the driver get out of the vehicle seconds before the train struck and carried the car 100 yards down the tracks.

Officials praised the response of the train’s locomotive engineer, calling it unusual and effective. The engineer helped by feathering five engine brakes to slow the train before impact.

social media post from Springville Fire & Rescue credits the engineer’s quick braking with allowing enough time for the person to escape safely. “Even Fire Engine Engineers have heroes — Locomotive Engineers!” the post reads.
