Last week, a Peruvian fisherman was rescued after drifting at sea for 94 days, surviving on birds, turtles, and cockroaches. Maximo Napa set sail from San Juan de Marcona, Peru, on December 7th but was carried off course by bad weather and ocean currents. An Ecuadorian vessel spotted his small boat off the coast of Chimbote, Peru, last Tuesday and the Peruvian Navy provided medical care before he was discharged in good condition.
Napa, 61, credits his survival to focusing on his mother and newborn granddaughter, saying he never lost hope. His family describes his rescue as a miracle. His daughter, Ines Napa, said they never gave up, and his niece, Leyla Torres Napa, says they even celebrated his birthday while he was lost at sea.
The Peruvian Navy released images on social media of Napa being checked out by a doctor and his emotional reunion with his brother. Napa’s family is grateful for his return and is looking forward to celebrating his second chance at life.
