A “society of Ryans” - a group of guys who all share the name and are known as the Ryan Meetup group, teamed up to save a baby who shares their name. It started when Ryan Ressler found out about a two-month-old Ryan in Kenya who was suffering from the neurological condition hydrocephalus, which causes developmental issues from excessive brain fluid.
Ressler was informed of the infant’s condition through the crowdfunding site Watsi, which he regularly contributes to. Without surgery, Ryan’s condition will lead to “severe physical and developmental delays,” but the surgery would “greatly improve his quality of life.” The baby requires care that means his single mom can’t work, making the cost impossible for her.
Knowing what the Society of Ryans could do, Ressler emailed the group that there was “a little Ryan that needs our help” and asked them all to donate. In less than an hour, Ryans across the country chipped in and they raised the remaining $559 of the total $719 needed to save baby Ryan. Ressler is grateful for the group’s support, noting, “It took a few emails and someone around the world is now benefitting from everyone coming together.”
