Lifeguards Rescue Teen Trapped in 6-Foot Hole On Cali Beach

Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl was rescued from a partially collapsed hole in the sand at Mission Beach, San Diego. Lifeguards arrived around just before 5 p.m. to find the teen buried up to her neck in a six-foot-wide hole, with only her head and arms visible. Initial attempts to pull her out failed, prompting lifeguards and park rangers to start digging with shovels.

Despite the precarious situation, the girl was conscious, breathing, and talking during the rescue. Lifeguards kept her calm while they worked to free her as a large crowd gathered to watch. After several minutes of digging, the girl was freed from the hole uninjured. She walked to a stretcher with the help of lifeguards.

The teen was evaluated by medical personnel on-site. Fortunately, she didn’t require any more treatment and was released. San Diego Lifeguard Lieutenant Jacob Magness later cautioned against digging deep holes or tunnels on the beach due to the risk of collapse, injury, and even death.
