#GoodNews: Boy Scouts Use Water Bottles To Put Out Wildfire

The Willamette National Forest is crediting a Boy Scout troop from Oregon for putting out a wildfire that got away from an abandoned campsite.

Troop 50 from the Stayton area was on a 25-mile backpacking trip in the forest when their leader spotted the smoldering campfire.

Videos and photos show the scouts and leaders using water bottles to extinguish the fire, which they estimate was about 200-square feet.

They formed a human chain to relay water from a lake to the fire and with no one else around, it could’ve spread quickly if they hadn’t caught it, according to Assistant Scoutmaster Stephen Fulks.

In a tweet, the forest department calls the troop “unsung heroes” and writes, “thanks to their quick work, we avoided a bigger incident.”
