Good News: Divers Set New World Record For Cleaning Up Ocean Floor Trash

Over 600 scuba divers came out to set a new world record for cleaning up litter from the ocean floor.

There were 633 divers picking up trash on the seafloor near the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier in Florida on Saturday and an official on hand from Guinness to certify the head count.

Divers had to stay in the water for at least 15 minutes to make it count toward the record.

It’s unknown just how much litter they collected, but diver and environmentalist RJ Harper reports that divers got 1,600 pounds of lead fishing weights alone. He says with that many divers they “were able to do a very thorough cleaning.”
