High School Student Allegedly Assaults Staff Member Over Vaping

Willoughby - On Monday, March 20th, Willoughby Fire responded to Willoughby South High School for a report of a staff member bleeding from the head. The staff member was a 69-year-old man who serves as a hall monitor. It was reported that a school student pushed the hall monitor backward. The assault occurred at the entrance of the boys restroom. The school resource officer began to view surveillance footage and identified 18 years old-Ke’Shaun Howard as being involved in the assault. Howard was later located in the cafeteria area and was taken into custody without incident. Howard was one of several students being detained in the restroom for possibly being involved in smoking and or vaping. He violently pushed the hall monitor backward so that he could leave the restroom.

The 69-year-old hall monitor was transported to LakeWest Hospital for further medical attention. It was later found that the hall monitor had also suffered a concussion and a laceration to the back of the head. He has not returned to work as of this release. Ke’Shaun Howard was transported back to the Willoughby Police Department and charged with the following criminal offenses: Aggravated Disorderly Conduct (M-4) and Felonious Assault (F-2). He was arraigned on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, and his $5,000 cash/surety bond was later posted. His next court date is a Preliminary Hearing on 03-30-2023 at Willoughby Municipal Court.

Please be assured that Willoughby-Eastlake will follow the appropriate Board Policies and Administrative Guidelines when assigning consequences for the offense that recently occurred at South High School. Additionally, we will cooperate with the Willoughby Police Department to ensure that they are able to conduct a thorough investigation and take the legal action they determine to be necessary.”
