(Vermilion) — Authorities have rescued the residents of six homes by boat as ice jams caused river flooding.

No one was hurt as the Vermilion River crested Saturday following a text alert to residents on Friday warning of an ice jam.

Vermilion Fire Chief Chris Stempowski tells the Chronicle-Telegram that the rescued residents failed to heed evacuation warnings

Mayor Eileen Bulan says the residents are staying with friends and family until the water recedes.

She says the extent of the damage from the flooding won't be known until the water recedes.

Some residents were able to move their cars to higher ground, while others were water-logged in driveways.
