(Cleveland)--A surprise heavy snowfall has made road conditions in the snow belt very tough, closed schools, and has cut power to tens of thousands.

The early morning snowfall has closed schools in a handful of snow belt school districts, including South Euclid-Lyndhurst, West Geauga and Kenston.

Mark Durbin of FirstEnergy says heavy snow has cut power to about 47,000 customers. The heavy snow has brought down tree limbs, and that brings down power lines.

Amanda McFarland of ODOT tells WTAM 1100 that their crews could not pre-treat roads overnight because the rain would have washed away any salt and diluted brine.  She says motorists need to remember to drive slower and more cautiously when roads are snow covered.
