(Cleveland) - Leaders from Cuyahoga County, the City of Cleveland, Turner Construction, and Hilton Worldwide were on hand as ground was broken for the latest downtown hotel.

Work is underway on the new 600 room Hilton, at the corner of Ontario and Lakeside Avenue. It will boast 55,000 square feet of meeting space, a restaurant, recreational facilities, and is to complement the city's new convention center.

Mayor Frank Jackson says the hotel will draw more visitors to downtown, and will spin off other economic activity and nearby improvements.

County Executive Ed Fitzgerald says he has no problem using public funding for the project, and contends it will attract even greater private investment in Cleveland’s business district.

The new hotel is expected to open early in 2016.
