(Columbus) - Columbus police say it was a female who was found in the middle of I-71, just south of Cooke Rd. early Wednesday. They also say it appears the woman was struck by more than one vehicle.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene just after 5 a.m.

The first truck driver that hit the woman called our sister station, WCOL-FM, and talked about the situation. He was clearly shaken up by what had happened.

"Before I realized what it was I just ran over it," he said.

He said he had no time to react or swerve and quickly got on the phone with police dispatchers begging them to get someone to shut down traffic.

"They just kept rolling over her and rolling over her," he said.

He watched at least three other semi trucks and several vehicles hit the woman before traffic was finally shut down. He suspected that the woman was already dead before he hit her.

"There was nothing I could do."

I-71 north remained closed at I-670 until just before noon.

The closure caused a ripple effect in morning rush-hour traffic, making for delays of up to half an hour.

Police say it's not known yet whether alcohol played a role in the accident.
