(Mentor) - A Mentor man has $10,000 to spend on Apple apps.

Apple announced Thursday that Brandon Ashmore of Mentor downloaded the 50 billionth apps from the company’s App Store. Brandon received a $10,000 App Store Gift Card to commemorate the historic milestone.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services says they were absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.

Brandon talked to Crain’s Cleveland Business about his windfall.

Mr. Ashmore said in an interview that he was watching a ticker on the App Store counting down to the 50 billionth download and downloaded Say the Same Thing — an app from the band OK Go — to his iPhone 5 on Wednesday afternoon. That night, an Apple representative called him and notified him that he had won the $10,000 Gift Card.

“I didn't actually believe it,” Mr. Ashmore said, adding, “I always thought nobody really wins these things.”

The App Store opened in July 2008 with 500 apps. Customers are now downloading more than 800 apps per second at a rate of over two billion apps per month.

The App Store now offers more than 850,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in 155 countries around the world.
